These Wente clone vines were first planted in 1968. (The Wente family brought the clone, known for its distinct citrus and Muscat aromas, to America from Mersault/Montrachet in the 1940s.)
The Stone's Throw block sits on a warm southern slope, 1300 feet above the Napa Valley in an area known as Pritchard Hill. The Chardonnay vines have thrived in this mineral-laden soil, which truly is just a stone's throw from our main estate building.
The 2001 release was fermented and aged in Francois Freres oak barrels and bottled unfiltered.
Stone's Throw Chardonnay - Tasting Notes
You'll discover rich tropical notes, flavors of banana and citrus with vanilla peach spice, and a full mouth that is rounded out with bright acidity. The Stone's Throw Chardonnay is rich and smooth without overpowering the palate.
The mineral core of this wine should allow it to age beautifully over the next 7-10 years, very much like its Burgundian cousins.
