The Melanson Vineyard is nestled
on the south facing side of Pritchard Hill, situated at 1,300
feet about Napa Valley's eastern ridge. The 2.5 acres Stone's
Throw Block sis made up of 41-year-old Chardonnay (Wente clone)
vines. Wente brought the clone known for its distinctive
citrus and muscat aromas to the U.S. in the 1940s from
Meursault/Montrachet.
The 2005 release was
fermented and aged in Francois Freres barrels and bottled filtered.
Stone's Throw Chardonnay - Tasting Notes
This 41-year-old block
of Wente selection CH produces intensely flavored wine. The
color can be dark due to the tiny berries (often shot).
Nutrients are extremely low and therefore the must requires extra
nitrogen and other vitamins.
All this adds up to a Chardonnay with tremendous
texture. The fruit comes from the oldest part of the vineyard
where the soil is rocky and the vines struggle to produce.
Grown
from the original Wente clone, made famous by Kistler, the wine
exhibits an oily and mineral character more commonly found
in great white burgundies. Exotic floral aromas of citrus
peel, honey oak, butter and toast are followed by full body, rich,
well-balanced mouth feel and texture. The finish lingers and compels
you to drink another glass.
